Woodwinds

Private lessons are offered in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon. Many of the woodwind students at CSM are actively involved in band programs at their elementary, middle, or high schools. Much of the focus in these private lessons is on improving technique and tone production as well as learning to perform specific pieces from those programs. Preparation for All County, All District, All State, and other auditions is included for those participating in these events. Woodwind instrument rentals are available through our partner site NEMC.

Instructors

Dr. Mary Huntimer

Dr. Mary Huntimer is an active saxophonist and woodwind teacher in the Research Triangle. She currently teaches saxophone and music education at Meredith College. Dr. Huntimer is also the woodwind instructor for Green Hope High School Marching Band and Green Level High School Marching Band. She performs with the Triangle Wind Ensemble, the Chapel Hill Philharmonia, and the Bull City Sax Quartet. Dr. Huntimer has performed at NASA regional conferences and the Navy Saxophone Symposium. She has also performed at Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Dr. Huntimer graduated with a DMA in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2012. She also has a MM in saxophone performance from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BME from South Dakota State University.  

Emma Morris

Emma Morris is a member of the Raleigh Flute Choir and the Music Director of the Silver Fantasy Flute Choir in Raleigh. She actively performs and teaches in North Carolina and in the past has played with many renowned groups across the East Coast of the US. Emma earned her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and her Master of Music in Performance at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. When she isn’t playing or teaching the flute, Emma enjoys hiking with her husband and their dog Boo.

Lauren Robbins-Pollack

Lauren Robbins-Pollack earned her MM degree in flute performance from the University of Arizona and her Bachelor’s in Music from the University of Michigan, where she studied music education and performance. Locally, she plays with groups such as the Tar River Orchestra and the Raleigh Flute Choir and is active in the Raleigh Area Flute Association. She has performed with the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir and has toured Europe and Asia with the International Flute Orchestra.

Philip Scott

Philip Scott has been teaching clarinet and saxophone at Cary School of Music for over 20 years, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Baldwin-Wallace University (Berea, Ohio). He began his music career teaching instrumental music (grades 5-12}. While living in the Cleveland area, Philip was a member of the Opus One Chamber Orchestra, and Blossom Festival Concert Band. After moving to Raleigh, he performed with groups such as the Triangle Wind Ensemble, and North Carolina Wind Orchestra. Currently, Philip is a member of Mimosa Woodwind Quintet, Windjammer Trio, and White Memorial Presbyterian Church handbell choir.

Nadya Stratton

Nadya Stratton graduated from Youngstown State University Dana School of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz performance. She plays flute and piano with an extensive background in classical, jazz, and rock including numerous performances with symphonies, ensembles, marching bands and contemporary rock bands. Nadya has performed on stage with Nestor Torres, a well known Latin jazz flute player who’s based in Miami, Florida. In addition, she has worked with Joe Augustine, a Steinway pianist, who has performed with many great artists including Tony Bennett. She also had the opportunity to perform in the VIP section for the Dave Matthew’s band. Nadya currently performs at local venues solo and with a rock band and an Irish band.
 
She has been teaching private lessons since college graduation and enjoys teaching flute and piano to various age groups. Nadya has experience working in other roles in the music industry, including composing for an orchestra, recording and mixing for clients, and even producing her own music.
